Even to this day, I’m amazed at the conversations sparked by my decision to embrace my natural grey hair.
Throughout history, society has celebrated men for wearing their age with pride,— whether it’s in the form of grey hair or wrinkles (hello, George Clooney). Meanwhile, the beauty industry thrives on marketing creams and root touch-up sprays to women, who are stigmatised for looking old.
Five years ago, I made the bold choice to ditch the dye. What I didn't anticipate was that my decision would invite scrutiny from others, revealing outdated notions about beauty and youth. And what I truly realised, is that beneath the surface of these discussions lies a deep-seated frustration with ageing, wrinkles, changing body shapes and sagging skin.
Finding freedom in accepting my grey has been liberating. Nowadays strangers often compliment my hair, brightening my day. My silver streaks can equally inspire and shock a lot of people! And to be honest, I like the rebelliousness of silver hair. I like that it’s non-conformist in a time when societal pressure to remain youthful is ever present.
I take pride in wearing my grey confidently, knowing which colours compliment my complexion in clothing, accessories, and makeup. As silver growth surrounds a mature face, it serves as a natural reflector, adding highlights in the most flattering way. Several women have come up to me saying ‘I wish I was brave enough to let my grey grow out.’ And I reply: "You are! You only need to find out the perfect colours to light up your face and the perfect lipstick to brighten your eyes".
I do love that more and more women dare to go grey. I sometimes get messages from women who say that my hair inspired them to join the silver sisterhood and I always find that incredible and very touching.
Letting go of the false illusion that we can halt the natural ageing process is truly empowering. And how we opt to celebrate the precious gift of life is entirely within our control! Investing our resources in experiences and adventures, savouring the myriad joys of growing older, is a far wiser choice.
